Search For New Technical Director Is Finally Over

West Ham United have taken their time in finding a replacement for former Technical Director Kyle Macaulay who left his position back on 9 October. Well, it was confirmed on Saturday that the process has come to an end and they have finally found the right man to replace him, as Belgian Nils Koppen has taken up the role.

Koppen will join up with the East Londoners subject to being granted the correct work permit and will add great experience to the job having been in a similar position at FC Copenhagen. It is well-known that this role has rarely been smooth in Stratford, as the appointment of Tim Steidten in June 2023 proved. It eventually led to the departure of David Moyes just under a year later. Having said that though, Nuno Espírito Santo has welcomed Koppen’s imminent arrival, as he was part of the selection panel. West Ham fans will hope that the new man is a success in the role and doesn’t go the same way as both Steidten and Mario Husillos. Fans may remember that Husillos arrived at the start of the 2018/19 season under then manager Manuel Pellegrini and was the first man to be given this role.

At the time that each of them took over, Steidten and Husillos were given full control of the club’s transfer strategy but on both occasions, it was a disaster.

Koppen wasn’t involved in any of the negotiations that saw Venezuelan youngster Keiber Lamadrid making his loan move from Deportivo La Guaira permanent, or the respective exits of Krisztián Hegyi and Mateus Fernandes to Czech outfit Sparta Prague and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Even Rayan Oyebade’s loan to Southend United came too early for him to be involved.

However, he will now play a part in every move both in and out of Stratford going forward so, us fans now need to put our trust in both him and the Head-Coach and hope they can make the right moves to achieve a quick return to the top-flight.
