Cornet Next in at Hammers

Following the arrival of Gianluca Scamacca on July 20, West Ham United have bolstered their attacking options further with the capture of Maxwel Cornet from Burnley on an initial five-year deal with the possibility of a further twelve months.

The 25-year-old was one of the clubs top targets this summer but he also attracted interest from Everton and the Hammers turned their attention to Lille midfielder Amadou Onana. At the third time of asking, the two clubs finally agreed a fee for the player.

It then transpired that personal terms couldn’t be agreed with Onana and having not given up on Cornet, the East Londoners were then focused on trying to push for a deal for the forward. An initial loan deal was agreed but then the London club activated the £17.5m release clause in his contract.

Unfortunately, the Ivory Coast international didn’t complete the deal by the 12pm deadline in order to be registered for this weekend’s Premier League opener at home to Manchester City but will be expecting to make his debut against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on 14 August.

More news regarding transfers both in and out of Stratford will be confirmed as soon as it is available.
